Out of the Woods (Fairy Tale Card Game and Book)

Created by American McGee

Once upon a time... There was a game designer called American McGee who having lived a life of dramatic ups and downs, decided to present a unique take on a selection of traditional fairy tales as a Table Top Card Game, Illustrated Book, Coloring Book, and Collection of Art. He hoped the lessons contained within might help others along their journey through the dark woods of existence. With the success of this campaign we'll deliver a wicked card game, beautiful illustrated book, twisted coloring book, and turn "Out of the Woods" into an ongoing series of games, books, and original art. Don't be eaten by wolves. Get Out of the Woods!

Latest Updates from Our Project:

80k and 45% with 28 Days Remaining

Wonderful progress on the campaign thus far! Another BIG THANKS to everyone who's supported and helped spread the word. But we're... you guessed it... not out of the woods yet.

We still have another 95k to raise, which means we need an average of 40 new backers per day for the remainder of the campaign. To achieve that goal I'm working with Martin to promote the campaign via Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, my blog, other social locations, and via paid-for Facebook marketing.

Important Note: If you see our Facebook marketing, be sure to like it, comment on it, and share it. Your positive response to those ads helps reduce the cost per click. Thanks!

So far, so good, but we could use your help.

Help us make Out of the Woods a reality by posting about the project to your social media channels. Share project info, images, and the Kickstarter trailer. Let people know how excited you are and how quickly we're heading towards a successful and awesome finish (with their help).

Here's the trailer on YouTube. Share it!

Lastly, if you know or follow any "influencers" on Twitter, YouTube, or other social channels, be sure to let them know about Out of the Woods. Would be great to get a spotlight pointed at us by someone with a huge following! Anyone know Pewdiepie?! (Yes, that's Pewdiepie playing Alice: Madness Returns!)

Got questions, ideas, or feedback on promotion and hitting our funding goal? Leave your thoughts in the comments below. More fun and creative content (art, etc) coming soon!

Fellow Travelers,

THANK YOU for helping give "Out of the Woods" an impressive launch. In less than 12 hours you've pushed funding to nearly 25% and put the campaign on track for an impressive finish. But let's not count our chickens... we're not out of the woods yet.

(Any bets on how many times I'll punish that phrase before the end of this campaign?!)

It's not conveyed in the Kickstarter story because I didn't want to get all mushy right off the bat but OOTW is a really personal and personally meaningful project to me. That's because the last year has been one of the most difficult of my life. Shutting down Spicy Horse, the studio I created and ran in Shanghai for 10 years, was bittersweet. I never realized how much of my identity was wrapped up in that place!

And I then encountered a series of personal tragedies for which I was wholly unprepared. No need to bore you with details, but these events sent me searching for meaning, tools, and explanation. From that search came a sense that I'd been doing many things wrong for a very long time. I'd made my bed, but wasn't prepared to pay the piper. Mixed metaphors were the least of my problems.

So that's why this project exists. It's an attempt to make something fun (the game) and something serious (the book) in the hopes both might illuminate some of the lessons I've recently learned (and re-learned). Where "Alice" was a cathartic expression of the traumas I suffered during childhood, OOTW is an exploration of the lessons I've learned (often painfully) in adulthood.

Oh, and cool art, dark humor, and awesome collectibles! Those things too!

I appreciate you enabling me to share all this with the world. And I promise we're going to make this thing great. The cards and books will be produced in "max spec" - all the production bells and whistles - something you'll be proud to support, own, and enjoy.

For those who backed my previous campaigns, you'll know I don't do these alone. Always along for the ride (in my lap) is Lulu...

And I'm also pleased to be working with Martin Berridge on campaign management, support, and communication. Feel free to reach out to us here on Kickstarter, via Facebook, and via any of the other social channels I maintain. We'll do our best to get back to you ASAP.

Martin wrote up a nice "how to" guide to Kickstarter, so be sure to check that out if you're scratching your head over tiers and add-ons. Especially useful for those of you who are after the Coloring Book or Poster Add-Ons but can't figure out how to add them.
